I certainly recognise this process in myself - well I have now. I&#39;m going to spread it like a deeply contagious but not-unpleasant venereal disease.<br /><br />When I was a teenager I used to get insulted when people told me I had ambition. I used to think that meant I was arrogant, or somehow not the self-deprecating little worm I had grown so used to being. My friend said “I think you&#39;ll make it because you have ambition”, and I fumed at this because what I WANTED to hear of course was “I think you&#39;ll make it because you&#39;re deeply talented, unique and just gosh darn godly”. But over the last two years I&#39;ve learnt that it&#39;s ambition – self-belief – that&#39;s got me here. A pinch of semi-talent here and there does help, but without self-belief I wouldn&#39;t apply for things, I wouldn&#39;t compete, and I wouldn&#39;t commit. I&#39;d say I have about an average level of skillz for the industry and my age (which is pretty damn good actually, haha), but with self-belief I earn experience, and with experience I get better. I think I&#39;ve possibly clinched my first ever writing credit, and without actually believing I could get there I never would.<br /><br />I only recently discovered the amount of self-belief it takes to say “I&#39;m a writer” earnestly. But I can back it up with a number of real-life, real-world writing projects and can wave a wee flag and go “NO BUT REALLY; I&#39;M DOING THIS, AND I&#39;M GONNA KEEP DOING IT!
